|The Archives Nationales du Mali are located in the west side of the capital city of Bamako. The main building is located in the neighborhood of Hamdallaye on the west site of town, while the annex is located in the old archive building on the Kuluba Plateau adjacent to the Presidential Palace. The collection began as the Service archiviste du Soudan Fran‡ais, which collected colonial records for the French Soudan including territory that later became part of independent Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Niger. The documents are indexed in five groups. The first group, the fonds anciens were classified in 1974 by (then Director) M. Moussa Niakaté and cover the period from 1854 to 1954, organized in series lettered A to UZ. The second group, the fonds recents, was classifed under the direction of the current director (1998), M. Aly Ongoïba, and include documents from 1916 to 1960. Since then, additional efforts at classification have produced three more indexes: fonds nouveaux (tome I, tome II et tome III), listing documents from 1920 to 1960.

|The Archives du Senegal are housed along with the Archives de l'Afrique Occideental Française in the "Immeuble Administratif" (a.k.a. Building Administratif) on the Avenue Senghor near the intersection with the Boulevard de la République, diagonally across from the Presidential Palace. The Archives and reading room are located in the curved extension at the north end of the building.|
Access to the Archives can be arranged upon arrival, but access to the building is by pass only, so it is a necessary to contact the Directeur des Archives in advance, or else find someone to escort you into the building. The reading room is open from 9h00-18h00 Monday-Friday except Wednesday (15h00- 18h00) and Saturday (9h00-12h00). It contains tables and chairs for twenty-five readers, plus microfilm readers and open access to catalog indexes. All access to documents is through the President de la Salle de Lecteur who receives requests in writing (on cards provided by the Archives). Photocopy and microfilm facilities are available.
The collection of the Archives du Sénégal begin in 1816 with the restoration of Gorée to the French throne after the Napoleonic Wars (documents concerning earlier material from West Africa are kept in the French National Archvies). It contains the Archives du Gorée, the Archives du Sénégal (beginning in 1850), and the Archives de l'AOF (founded 1895). It also contains a library of secondary and periodical sources on Senegalesee and French colonial history.

|The Institute Fondamental de l'Afrique Noire Cheikh Anta Diop is located on the campus of the Université de Dakar in the Dakar suburb of Fann, near the intersection of the Route de Fann and the Route de la Corniche Ouest. IFAN was founded in 1936 as the Institut Français de l'Afrique Noire to provide support for scientific and social research on all aspects of African life. The institute houses a library and office space for researchers in Fann, operates an academic publishing house, and manages an art museum in downtown Dakar and a museum on Goree Island.|
